Shadowing a Support Worker

Updated: Apr 27, 2023

I recently shadowed Nathaniel, a support worker at Maples, and got to see first-hand the level of care and dedication that goes into supporting our service users. Nathaniel showed me how he builds rapport with clients, how he tailors his approach to suit individual needs, and how he assists clients with daily tasks.

A day in the life of a support worker is extremely varied, one hour you may be taking a service user for a walk and providing social interaction, and the next hour you may be helping a different service user clean their flat and ensuring they are living in a comfortable and safe space. Nathaniel loves the variety in his job, stating “I feel very well supported at Maples and my job is very rewarding”.

It takes a compassionate and empathetic person to provide the level of care required by support workers and key workers. "I feel a huge pull to help our service users. We’re all human at the end of the day, and if I were in their situation, I would want someone to do the same for me." Says Nathaniel. Another support worker, Kieran, speaks highly of Nathaniel, “Nathaniel is probably the best person to ask, whenever I see him, he's always doing stuff to help our service users".

The dedication and care shown by our support workers and key workers not only has a positive impact on our service users but has also helped to create a nurturing and supportive environment for them to thrive in. Jamie has been a service user within Maples for five years and speaks very highly of his experience with Maples saying "I really like it here, to see where I've come from now and where I've been, it's quite something really, I've got so far."

The impact of the support workers and key workers at Maples goes beyond just providing daily care and assistance. Their dedication and empathy have created a community where service users can not only survive but also thrive and we’re grateful for their hard work and commitment to providing the best possible care for those who need it.

The work of our support workers and key workers at Maples is crucial in providing care and assistance to our service users. Their dedication, compassion, and empathy have created a nurturing and supportive environment where our service users can thrive and achieve their full potential. The impact of their hard work extends beyond just providing daily care and assistance, as it has helped to build a community that fosters growth and development. We are grateful for the commitment and effort of support workers and key workers at Maples, and we appreciate the positive impact they have on the lives of our service users.
